From Cartagena to Formentera (Balearic Islands)

Sunday 1st August

Although we do not have the pilot book for the Balearics, we have a couple of charts and the Mediterranean Almanac which gives details of a few ports there. So we decided to leave Cartagena for Formentera, which we estimated was some 30 hours away.

We started out tacking upwind, and after we had made very slow progress for two hours we gave up and switched on the engine. The wind slowly dropped to nothing by 2 a.m. but rose again to 9 knots by lunchtime the next day, so again we were able to sail without the engine for a time.
