Dominica, Roseau
The area for anchoring was even tighter here, we made sure we were well in and took extra care to set our anchor alarm, as the shelf dropped away steeply close to where we were. We anchored close to the cruise ship dock near the town. We were advised that the previous day there had been two break-ins into yachts further along the bay, so again we were especially careful here.
Roseau is considerably bigger than Portsmouth and has many expensive hotels, as well as big trade from cruise ships, and it is the business centre for the island. Consequently we felt the place was in general more touristy and impersonal. However it was still pleasant enough. We went shopping in the Astaphan supermarket, which had quite a good choice of goods, and also offered a free bus home with our shopping, which was a very useful service!
We did not stay longer than necessary in Roseau and after a couple of days we moved on to Martinique.
We really enjoyed our time in Dominica and would definitely recommend it.
We sailed to Martinique almost in company with a Canadian boat we had made friends with (they were faster and overtook us!). The five-hour crossing had a regular Atlantic swell and a fair lot of trade winds, once we left the lee of Dominica.Â
