Martinique, Fort de France

The anchorage is quite central, under the fort near the cruise ship and ferry docks, it is a bit rolly in the day but ok at night. The holding is fair.

As soon as we arrived we heard bad stories from a yachtsman we had met in Antigua, he had been mugged and warned us to be very cautious. However we did not feel threatened during our time in Fort de France. We enjoyed the carnival procession on our first afternoon, and went to explore the boatyard and town on successive days.

We refilled our water tank cheaply from the fuel station at the boatyard, price 1 Euro per 100 litres. They did not offer duty free fuel but agreed fuel would be cheaper in St Lucia.

We found a good internet cafe in town but it was expensive. There was no free wireless access from the anchorage.

The main drawback at Fort de France was that we could not swim, we felt the water was too dirty. One day we took the dinghy to a hotel beach out of town, but we soon decided to move the yacht to a quieter place, Anse Mitan, opposite Fort de France.

A few days later we returned to Fort de France to sign out and do a final French supermarket run, and then sailed to Grande Anse d’Arlet, a convenient anchorage for a departure to St Lucia the following morning.
