Society Islands, Moorea – Jul 2007

After finishing our jobs in Tahiti and spending too much money, we decided to give ourselves and our bank account a rest in neighbouring Moorea. We motored to Papeete again to get water and a couple of last-minute items from the shops, then motored away at about 2pm. We soon had a lovely wind which took us right to Cook’s Bay on Moorea’s north coast before dark.

Inside the pass and deep into the bay the water was calm and we spent two relaxing days there amid some stunning sceenery and a fair dollop of rain. The bay is inside what was once a huge volcano, the northern half of which has long ago gone into the sea.

Next we motored out of the pass on a calm day to neighbouring Opunohu Bay, and ran straight into a canoe race, flanked by hundreds of local motor boats cheering on! Our flat sea was torn up by wakes, but we did get some good photos!

We anchored just inside the Opunohu Bay pass where other boats we knew were already, and where we knew there was an Iaoranet wireless internet service. We had a good couple of days here, and the internet was excellent as was the snorkelling. Dan got to spend a day with the kids from “Hullaballoo” who we had first met at Ahé. They taught him to use his fins properly and he is now very speedy! But the next day he got upset when he dropped a fin in deep water, of course it sinks! Nigel just managed to catch it but it rocked Dan’s confidence.
